Styled Wedding Photo Shoot

I had a wonderful opportunity to work with The Wedding Girls and Laura Lorraine Designs when they asked me to design a cake for their Palm Springs wedding photo shoot! The directions were simple: geometric cake with a minimalistic design. MUSIC TO MY EARS! Since I knew we were going to be working in the desert, I threw in some sugar sculpted succulents onto the cake.  For more photos check out: http://www.brookemerrill.com/brookemerrillblog/2013/5/15/palm-springs-ca-styled-wedding       Credits: Event Read more [...]

Vintage Baptism Cake

It's not every day your 5th grade teacher finds and adds you on Facebook! I was so excited to reconnect with my favorite elementary school teacher. She is one of the few people who helped shape me into the person I am today. Growing up in an Armenian community wasn't always easy and thinking "outside the box" used to be very unconventional during my youth and more often than not I stuck out like a sore thumb amongst my peers. But this teacher embraced my "weirdness" and encouraged my imagination Read more [...]

Metallic Silver Wedding Cake

I recently had the honor of having my cake featured in a photo shoot by Spot N Photo!  The cake is a 4 tiered wedding cake and the top most tiered was made using edible 23k silver! The third ruffle tiered was designed using Maggie Austin as an inspiration.I had a great time working with Pablo from Spot n Photo! Here are the images: Read more [...]

Star Wars Wedding & Death Star Cake

I recently designed an entire dessert table for a wedding. Part of the table included the Death Star groom's cake for a huge Star Wars fanatic. When I say huge, I mean HUGE! I was told he even dressed up as Han Solo for the couple's first dance!! Here is a picture of their wedding countdown: I snapped pictures (unfortunately they are poor quality, I'm sorry!) during the process, so here is a small pictorial! But first, the final product: My team and I sculpted the Han Solo and Princess Read more [...]

Agra Hadig- Armenian First Tooth Celebration

From the Library of Congress: "The centuries-old Armenian tradition agra hadig is celebrated worldwide by Armenians, no matter where they live -- Armenia, Turkey, Lebanon, Iran, or the U.S. Agra means "tooth," and hadig refers to a traditionally cooked wheat dish eaten on this occasion. The agra hadig celebrates the appearance of the baby's first tooth. The mother props the infant up on a table or on the floor and places five objects in front of the child; the first object the baby selects Read more [...]

Pomegranate Humor

Shakar Bakery® can't get any more customizable than this!! I received a phone call a few days ago from someone I had met two months ago in Boston. He wanted to place a cake order for a pre-wedding celebration here in Los Angeles. The conversation went something like this: him: "I'd like to order a cake from you!" me: "great! what's the theme?" him: "hmm...well, the bride is having a pomegranate themed wedding because she loves pomegranates. the groom likes to cycle. What do you think?" me: Read more [...]

Hello Kitty Birthday Cake

A week ago, I was contacted for a Hello Kitty cake. My customer wanted a pink cake, Hello Kitty themed, and she e-mailed me a few pictures. She told me she liked the pictures where Hello Kitty was surrounded by friends. I chose the following picture, and told her I would sculpt the images for her. I had never, ever before sculpted or designed a Hello Kitty cake! I was very excited for this project since I know she's a favorite amongst so many people, and as usual, I like facing new challenges- Read more [...]

Covering A Cake With Fondant

When I started my business, my biggest challenge was learning to properly cover a cake with fondant. I either rolled the fondant to thick, or I pulled the fondant too quickly and tore it and had to start all over, or (every decorator's nightmare) I overworked the fondant and it refused to behave! True story, this happened to me at around 1am when I was working on a baptism cake. The fondant refused to spread properly, and I was unable to purchase more fondant until 8 am the following morning. The Read more [...]

Candy Themed Baby Shower Cake

My friend commissioned this cake for her friend's baby shower. She called me up and said "Shantal, we want a baby shower cake, a candy theme for a boy. The colors are going to be blue, white and brown, and we want lollipops!!" So after mulling over a few ideas, I came up with the cake you see pictured above. For those of you interested in replicating this cake, and you live in Los Angeles, I will warn you that those lollipops were definitely not easy to find. I had to do some online researching Read more [...]
