Figs in a cat-cycle

As you know by now, I take pride in telling my customers that my cakes are completely customized to their wants and desires (as long as I approve of their flavor combinations. I once made the mistake of agreeing to raspberry jam with vanilla cake and almond frosting. I seriously gagged when I sampled the combination and called the customer and said I'm switching their flavor to something more palatable.Yes, I do that. Trust me, it's for the best). Well, this bride-to-be really took my customizing Read more [...]

Dr.Seuss

A few weeks ago, I received an e-mail from a previous client asking if I could please bake a Dr.Seuss cake for her friend's party? The request had a funny timing in my personal life, because I had just spent some time teasing a good friend of mine for not knowing who Dr.Seuss was! Within a day, I got the Dr.Seuss cake order request, and I was able to teach him more about Dr.Seuss! The more I spoke about the cake, the more I realized there were people who were completely clueless about Dr.Seuss, Read more [...]

Pomegranate Humor

Shakar Bakery® can't get any more customizable than this!! I received a phone call a few days ago from someone I had met two months ago in Boston. He wanted to place a cake order for a pre-wedding celebration here in Los Angeles. The conversation went something like this: him: "I'd like to order a cake from you!" me: "great! what's the theme?" him: "hmm...well, the bride is having a pomegranate themed wedding because she loves pomegranates. the groom likes to cycle. What do you think?" me: Read more [...]

Rock Star Guitar Cake

This cake was by far the easiest, yet the most challenging cake I have made! I think it was more challenging because I was on crutches and had to depend on others to bring me things, carry things for me, and support me as much as possible. But I love the end result! I made the guitar out of Styrofoam and covered it with fondant. I then molded all the buttons and details out of fondant. The cake itself is vanilla, and I frosted it with buttercream. The sides are covered with edible paper with a Read more [...]

How Sweet It Is!

This weekend I had the pleasure of baking for my best friend's engagement get together with friends. I am very close friends with her boyfriend as well, so I wanted to bring their relationship alive with the cake. They have done a 10 year long-distance relationship before sealing the deal with the ring. He was doing med-school in New York, while she was living in California. On her last trip to New York, they went to Niagara Falls where he asked her to marry him. From there, they decided to literally Read more [...]

Under the Sea Baby Shower Cake

A marine biologist commissioned Shakar Bakery for an "under the sea" baby shower cake for the baby she is expecting. The cake was to serve 50 people.  For decorations she wanted a scuba diving baby, just like this one here , sea shells, sea turtles, coral and random sea life  incorporated into the cake. With that in mind, I started to formulate my cake. I wanted two tiers, with the baby as a cake topper. I gave the scuba diving baby sculpt work to my mom, Elizabeth, because she has incredible talent Read more [...]

Kung Fu Panda Cake

Kung Fu Panda cake officially joined the 30's celebration! In the past, I have created these fun, child-like themed cakes for family and friends who turned 30 in order to celebrate their inner child.  This cake was not only baked for a friend who turned 30, he also happens to be a doctor, which makes it more comical (at least to me)! This cake was a little tricky to make since I had to bake two separate cakes and then merge them together. The panda was made with marble cake, and the base Read more [...]
