Styled Wedding Photo Shoot

I had a wonderful opportunity to work with The Wedding Girls and Laura Lorraine Designs when they asked me to design a cake for their Palm Springs wedding photo shoot! The directions were simple: geometric cake with a minimalistic design. MUSIC TO MY EARS! Since I knew we were going to be working in the desert, I threw in some sugar sculpted succulents onto the cake.  For more photos check out: http://www.brookemerrill.com/brookemerrillblog/2013/5/15/palm-springs-ca-styled-wedding       Credits: Event Read more [...]

Vintage Baptism Cake

It's not every day your 5th grade teacher finds and adds you on Facebook! I was so excited to reconnect with my favorite elementary school teacher. She is one of the few people who helped shape me into the person I am today. Growing up in an Armenian community wasn't always easy and thinking "outside the box" used to be very unconventional during my youth and more often than not I stuck out like a sore thumb amongst my peers. But this teacher embraced my "weirdness" and encouraged my imagination Read more [...]

Math Can’t Lie- The Truth Behind Cake Servings

The most common question a baker will ask is: how many cake tiers do I need for X amount of guests? Cake tiers range from 4" in diameter to 18+" (it must be pretty awesome to have an oven large enough to accommodate 20" diameter pans!) and are usually 4-5" in height. When I was an amateur baker I took a lot of care in measuring my cake pans to calculate the correct servings. Thanks to my engineering background I even used math for my calculations! My equation was simple for a 2" tall cake: C=πD    Read more [...]

Metallic Silver Wedding Cake

I recently had the honor of having my cake featured in a photo shoot by Spot N Photo!  The cake is a 4 tiered wedding cake and the top most tiered was made using edible 23k silver! The third ruffle tiered was designed using Maggie Austin as an inspiration.I had a great time working with Pablo from Spot n Photo! Here are the images: Read more [...]

Star Wars Wedding & Death Star Cake

I recently designed an entire dessert table for a wedding. Part of the table included the Death Star groom's cake for a huge Star Wars fanatic. When I say huge, I mean HUGE! I was told he even dressed up as Han Solo for the couple's first dance!! Here is a picture of their wedding countdown: I snapped pictures (unfortunately they are poor quality, I'm sorry!) during the process, so here is a small pictorial! But first, the final product: My team and I sculpted the Han Solo and Princess Read more [...]

Agra Hadig- Armenian First Tooth Celebration

From the Library of Congress: "The centuries-old Armenian tradition agra hadig is celebrated worldwide by Armenians, no matter where they live -- Armenia, Turkey, Lebanon, Iran, or the U.S. Agra means "tooth," and hadig refers to a traditionally cooked wheat dish eaten on this occasion. The agra hadig celebrates the appearance of the baby's first tooth. The mother props the infant up on a table or on the floor and places five objects in front of the child; the first object the baby selects Read more [...]

Yo Gabba Gabba Foofa Cake

Recently, I received an order for a Yo Gabba Gabba cake in the shape of the character Foofa. The beauty of this job is that a lot of times I have to work with ideas that are foreign to me. I had no idea what Yo Gabba Gabba was, or who Foofa was! Here's a google image of her. Here is the cake I baked for her: Read more [...]

Pistachio Rose Cake

This recipe was specially created for an Easter dinner at my sister's in-law's house. They're Persian-Armenian, and the pistachio/rose combination is a huge thing for them. The cake got good reviews from almost everyone. If you like ashta, a lebanese rose water dessert, then you will love my cake! The only bad review came from one guest that thought the cake was too "rosy."  However, the best thing about my recipe is that you can control the amount of flavor! Personally, I liked the cake. The Read more [...]
