Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend

Do you sometimes wonder how a business was discovered? What was it that set it off in a strong direction? There's always a special moment during the growth of a small business that helps set it apart from all the others. Mine was this cake, and its story has been long delayed. This blog gets personal...It's a rare insight that I choose to share with you. Back in March, while I was working on a very complex cake, I received a phone call from a good friend of mine, Manya, asking if I could put Read more [...]

Winnie the Pooh Cake

June was a very busy month, and one of the most adorable cakes I got to work on was a Winnie the Pooh themed cake for a baby shower! The mother-to-be was an ex-coworker of mine from my previous Engineering job, and she kindly asked me to make a cake for her shower since she always saw me posting pictures of my cakes online. Naturally, I said yes! I decided to also do a small candy table for her to go along with the cake. She was expecting 20 guests, and the colors of her party were blue and yellow. I Read more [...]

Hello Kitty Birthday Cake

A week ago, I was contacted for a Hello Kitty cake. My customer wanted a pink cake, Hello Kitty themed, and she e-mailed me a few pictures. She told me she liked the pictures where Hello Kitty was surrounded by friends. I chose the following picture, and told her I would sculpt the images for her. I had never, ever before sculpted or designed a Hello Kitty cake! I was very excited for this project since I know she's a favorite amongst so many people, and as usual, I like facing new challenges- Read more [...]

Classic Pool Table Cake

I have to say, that this is my favorite Shakar Bakery cake to date! This cake challenged me in so many ways, and really put engineering skills to the test! This cake was commissioned for a 50th anniversary party. The e-mail asked for a classic pool table cake, and the customer specifically requested that the pockets have some sort of netting to them since she didn't want me to build legs on the table cake. The other special request was to make some part of the cake diabetic Read more [...]

Tiered Ruffled Cake

This beautifully ruffled cake was put together for my mother's 60th birthday. It was my first time making fondant ruffles, and I have to tell you, it took quite a few tries for me to get the hang of it. The only inedible part of this cake were the borders. I have a funny story about the border (except maybe only my science/math oriented readers will laugh). When I went to buy the border, I took the roll to the worker to cut and I told her I needed enough to wrap around a 12" cake. She takes Read more [...]

Rock Star Guitar Cake

This cake was by far the easiest, yet the most challenging cake I have made! I think it was more challenging because I was on crutches and had to depend on others to bring me things, carry things for me, and support me as much as possible. But I love the end result! I made the guitar out of Styrofoam and covered it with fondant. I then molded all the buttons and details out of fondant. The cake itself is vanilla, and I frosted it with buttercream. The sides are covered with edible paper with a Read more [...]

Kung Fu Panda Cake

Kung Fu Panda cake officially joined the 30's celebration! In the past, I have created these fun, child-like themed cakes for family and friends who turned 30 in order to celebrate their inner child.  This cake was not only baked for a friend who turned 30, he also happens to be a doctor, which makes it more comical (at least to me)! This cake was a little tricky to make since I had to bake two separate cakes and then merge them together. The panda was made with marble cake, and the base Read more [...]
